Ask Shan
Student seeks tech support from school

Hiya Shane!
Earlier this year I went to the computer help desk in the humanities building, like so many others, to get my password changed. While I was there I asked them if they could help me out with a problem I was having with speakers on my personal laptop. They politely told me that they no longer work on student's personal computers and I would have to track someone down and even might have to pay someone to help me out.
Why do we not have a laptop help desk like so many other universities, including our "sister" school A&M, or better yet, why was it taken away? How would a student go about trying to re-establish that facility for our campus?
I was able to fix the problem later on but now new problems keep arising! What is a technology based idiot suppose to do?

Tessa,
There are several options that can help you attain a computer help center on campus. Every Wednesday at 5:15 p.m. in Room 22D of the Thompson Student Center the Student Government Association House meets. At the end of every house meeting we host a campus "ideas and issues" session. This is a great chance for students to voice their concerns to the university.
Another opportunity for students to explain their needs is once a month at the Presidential Dinner. This dinner is hosted by our university president and is a time for students to address the administration.
I have attended the Presidential Dinner for the past three years now and have witnessed issues brought to their attention acted upon almost immediately. If for some reason the administration's response isn't fast enough for you, SGA would be happy to help you draft a resolution.
Tarleton Texans, Tessa has brought up an issue that is important to her, there is no reason why every student with a concern or issue can't take these steps to fix his or her problem. Never forget that the SGA is here to not only hear students' issues but to resolve them as well!

Dear Shane,
I don't want to be too critical, but I really don't think you should have a segment in the J-Tac called "Ask Shane" if you are not going to answer the students questions. (Continued…)
