Tarleton is making changes to control the temperature. The "Central Loop Project," an endeavor Tarleton State University has been consistently working on for the past few years, is the new method to heat and cool the entire university on one system.

"Before, each building was heated and cooled separately by pumping water through coils. With the Central Loop Project there will be one source of hot and cold water going to all the buildings pumped from underground," said Steven Bowman, Energy and Utility Operations Manager. "It's a lot more efficient."

Since it's a much more effective way to run electricity, Bowman says it will keep Tarleton students from paying more than if each building had stayed on its own heating and cooling system. "It's a cost reduction measure," said Bowman.

Tarleton students may have noticed wooden steaks in the ground at various locations on campus. These mark the locations of where the pipes should be laid for the project.

"The surveyors are looking at proposed routes, getting the lay of the land and telling us where there are already power and water lines underground so we'll know where to dig and where to stay away from," said Bowman.

According to Bowman, some buildings are already on the new system. "Right now, the Thompson Student Center, science building, math building and library are all on the central loop. We'll be adding 11 more buildings, and we hope to finish sometime in December of 2009 or January of 2010."
