SAN ANGELO - The Tarleton Texan and TexAnn cross country teams won both events at the Angelo State Blue & Gold Classic Tuesday.
"I was very pleased with the way our athletes ran today," said Tarleton Head Coach Pat Ponder. "I hope the wins give us momentum as we go into the conference meet. If we can stay healthy, I think we can be very competitive at the meet. I was very proud of our kids today and how they competed."
The Texans, who were led by individual winner Rey Hinojosa (26:50) and second-place finisher Gerzain Valenzuela (27:04), scored 33 points en route to the victory on the five-mile course over Eastern New Mexico (45), Angelo State (66), Texas-Permian Basin (94) and Odessa College (135).
"The men did an excellent job of running as a team," Ponder said. "Our first goal for both squads was to win the meet. We trained through this race, and I feel like the guys did a good job of staying focus and finishing strong."
Travis Fort finished 11th for the Texans with a time of 28:15 while Kevin Emmert (28:24) was No. 13, Ryan Quasada (28:43) finished 15th, Westyn Rosilies (29:26) finished 21st and Chris Hearell (30:27) finished 31st.
The Tarleton men are ranked No. 8 in the South Central Region.
The TexAnns tallied 19 total points to finish 37 points ahead of West Texas A&M (56) were led by a one, two, three finish by Claudia Castanon (19:54), Shadoh Campbell (20:05) and Kymberlee Trnka (20:09).
Also running for the TexAnns was seventh place finisher Angela Riker (20:42), eighth place finisher Sheila Bishop (20:46), 11th place runner Danilee Webber (20:55) and No. 19 Morgan Kuykendall (21:48).
"I was very proud of the way the girls ran," Ponder said. "They did an outstanding job individually, but they still ran as a team. We had some girls really step up. We are training right through this meet, which means we didn't rest to prepare for the race. We are keeping our focus on conference and regionals."
Both teams will return to action at the LSC Championships on Saturday, Oct. 20, in Commerce.
