The most recent Tarleton guest speaker proclaimed, "get off your..."to a large crowd on Wednesday.
Andres Lara, aka "The Cuban Guy,"spoke in the Jesse Tackett Auditorium of the Joe W. Autry Agricultural Building. His program "How to Keep Going When You Feel Like Quitting" was an interactive presentation. He even taught the audience a magic trick.
Lara, an immigrant, escaped from Cuba when he was 16 years old. He went from being homeless and unable to speak English to being a millionaire public speaker in 10 years.
He spoke about not giving up on goals, overcoming obstacles and ignoring negative feedback.
"Who doesn't have a challenge? As a matter a fact, the only people who have no obstacles, the only people who have no challenges, the only people who have nothing to worry about are in a cemetery," Lara said.
He also spoke about how he got started. Lara described the moment he realized his dream of being a public speaker.
"When there is a will, there is a way. When you desire your goal as badly as a starving person desires food, the minute you desire it as badly as a homeless person desires shelter, as bad as a drowning person desires air - at that moment, you make your dreams reality. At that moment you make the intangible tangible," Lara said.
This program was sponsored by Human Resources, Career Services and the Center for Diversity Initiatives.
Lara also advertised his new book, How to Stay Motivated during Difficult Times. Students who would like to order his free book or learn more may visit www.TheCubanGuy.com
