The Writing Center has extended its hours from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, to also being open to help students in Room 106 of the Dick Smith Library next to the student lounge 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. During normal hours, the Writing Center is located in Room 210 of the O. A. Grant Building. The writing center opened its doors in the mid 1970s to help students learn invaluable writing skills.
"The Writing Center is designed for any student of any discipline who needs writing help to come get that help," said Alice Newsome, an English Professor that runs the Writing Center with the help of her colleague Ben Sword. "We have Graduate Assistants. We also have undergraduate peer tutors, who are trained by faculty members in the English department." Newsome has been working with the Writing Center for over 10 years.
This year there is only one graduate assistant helping students. Most semesters there are two to four.
This program offers many different types of writing training, but the Writing Center is not an editing service.
"It's just a good opportunity for students who need a friendly read of their paper. We have someone come in who is just going to do their best to help them. We are not an editing service. A lot of students think we proof read and edit papers. We will teach student how to do that themselves and how to notice those errors and that just helps them become better writers," Newsome said.
The center offers help for composition, research and literature. The Web site offers help on how to attribute sources in different formats.
