With so much damage and devastation from Hurricane Ike to coastal areas in Texas and other states, organizations around Tarleton have been doing there part to help out as much as they can.

The Sigma Chi Fraternity has put together a fund raiser to take items to victims of the hurricane in Houston. Jarrod Prince and Tyler McCollum came up with the idea to hold a "Take a Hike Ike" fund raiser.

Prince said he has family in Houston, which influenced his motivation to help.

"We are collecting supplies for victims of Hurricane Ike," said Prince. "Houston is our backyard so it feels good to help them out."

Sigma Chi is collecting water, non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products, as well as clothes.

According to Price, Sigma Chi is collecting the items with the intention of working with the Salvation Army or the American Red Cross when it is time to transport the donations.

The fund raiser has received its biggest donations from Eventide Water and the Student Activities Center. Eventide donated 14 pallets of water and Student Activities donated around 15 boxes of shaving cream.

"For them to bring that water is amazing," said Prince.

Prince said he is grateful that people have been very receptive to Sigma Chi's idea.

"We want to thank everyone who has contributed… and helped out so far," said Prince. Price also said that Sigma Chi was grateful for support from Alpha Gamma Delta.

If Sigma Chi does not find a charitable organization to help them haul the goods to Houston, Prince says they will deliver it themselves.

The fund raiser began Monday, Sept. 22, and will end Friday, Sept. 26. Donation tables will be set up every day in front of the dining hall from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and in front of H-E-B from 4 to 7 p.m.
