A crowd of more than 800 faculty, staff and students attended last Thursday's Presidential Assembly in the Wells Fine Arts main auditorium. President F. Dominic Dottavio began the ceremony by announcing the coming holiday and the closure of the campus, which was answered by applause. He followed the announcement with words of gratitude for the overall welcome to the university.

"I came to Tarleton because of our focus on students and commitment to teaching," said Dottavio, "Most of all, I came to Tarleton because of its people-passionate and dedicated to what Tarleton is and what it can be." Dottavio went on to discuss his 4-Point Strategic Plan for Tarleton's future, calling it" a blueprint from which we can build."

His first point involved goals for Tarleton to excel in scholarship, teaching and learning in the academic environment as well as encourage the progression of budding "nationally prominent programs" on campus.

Dottavio's second point was to expand Tarleton's horizons by not only allowing students to have the opportunity to enroll, but also offering them the opportunity to graduate and find success after graduation. Dottavio also addressed diversity and student life.

"Who are we recruiting to join the Tarleton family? What is the quality of their experience on campus? How can we be more strategic and more successful as a diverse university?" He asked.

The third point of the president's plan was encouraging leadership, service and student success. He said students not only need support programs in the classroom, but also outside the classroom with advising, health, wellness and counseling.

In his fourth point, Dottavio addressed extending university reach to the community outside of Tarleton and the state.

"Are we telling the people of this state, in an open and accountable manner, how Tarleton is impacting their lives?" asked Dottavio. "We have a great story to tell. I need your help as storytellers."

After reviewing, what he then called "the Four E's", Dottavio commented on his growing collection of purple ties and left the audience with a closing remarks.

"The gates are always open," he said. "It is up to us, together, to step through to the future."
